It’s #FairtradeMusic Friday! But instead of posting about individual albums I’d like to recommend a platform where to find them.
I haven’t really written about this new collectively owned and managed music publishing platform. Or as they describe it:
Mirlo is a community of musicians, listeners, and coders who are daring to do just that: taking lessons learned in working in the solidarity economy and applying them to our process and product.

I’ve been talking about other, similar music platforms in the past (like jam.coop), but I think Mirlo needs a special mention, because from all the Bandcamp alternatives and music publishing coops I have seen in recent years, this one seems to be the most promising for a series of reasons.

Things I like about Mirlo:
- It’s following a coop approach, does not get any VC money and is really a platform by musicians for musicians.
- While it’s all relatively new and hence a lot of features still need to be added, the features that are there are well thought out and implemented.
- Besides the basic album publishing functionality, there’s also the more social one: artists and labels can post updates and you can follow them to be updated about their activity.
- You can both buy individual albums or subscribe to an artist or label paying a monthly fee and get everything they make when it’s released. Plus probably some more. It’s of course to up to them to enable this or not.
- Last but not least, it looks pretty good and works well!
You can read more about what they do and how on their FAQ page.
I know I said this would be about the platform and not about albums, but let me post two anyway, since the embedding feature also works nicely:
Now go check it out at mirlo.space and Happy FairtradeMusic Friday everyone!!!
